Any wall should be clean of dust and completely dry. If you are painting walls for the first time, apply primer before paint. If the walls were previously painted, wash them thoroughly with a mild soap-and-water solution and rinse with clean water; if they haven't been painted for more than 4–5 years, it is again useful to apply primer. Patch cracks, nail holes and other surface imperfections with an appropriate patching material. Complete all flooring, carpentry and electrical work before painting, as painting should be the finishing step of a renovation.
